Don’t buy that cream-of chicken soup. It’s so easy to make cream of chicken soup (or any of the other cream-of soups) yourself in minutes.

I mean… you’re just thickening broth with a little flour and adding milk and whatever add-ins you want. So easy!

Benefits Of Homemade Soup

This homemade cream of chicken soup is made with wholesome ingredients from my own kitchen. Ingredients I recognize and can pronounce!

And although the commercial stuff sells for $1.79/can at our local store, my homemade version costs only pennies, allowing me to keep more of my money in my pocket.

Plus I’m using such goodness as homemade chicken broth, whole milk & fresh or dehydrated veggies from my garden.

So let’s get to putting this soup together!

Simple Cream Of Chicken Soup Ingredients

The ingredients for my cream-of soup are very simple.

Homemade Chicken Broth

Flour

Whole Milk

Seasonings – Celery Seed, Salt & Pepper

Optional Add-In’s For Homemade Cream-Of-Something Soup

If you want a heartier cream-of soup or a different flavor variety you can add:

Chopped cooked chicken for heartier cream-of-chicken soup

Drained can of mushroom pieces for cream-of-mushroom soup

Minced, sauteed celery for cream-of-celery soup

Minced sauteed onions or garlic for extra flavor

A tablespoon of butter or bacon grease to add richness

The sky’s the limit, y’all. Make it to suit your family’s tastes!

Making Homemade Cream Of Chicken Soup

Making my own homemade cream of chicken soup is beyond simple.

Mix flour, salt, pepper & celery seed in a pan.

Add chicken broth & milk.

Stir & simmer until soup gets thick.

And BOOM! Cream-of-Chicken Soup! (Sans the tin can and much of the salt, along with any of the other ingredients I could never pronounce.)

I’ve heard some use it as a shortcut for Chicken & Dumplings

For me most often I make this homemade cream-of-chicken soup to use in my homemade chicken pot pie. Simply stir in that soup, a couple of cans of drained mixed vegetables, some leftover chicken and a Homemade Pie Crust to make a delicious homemade Chicken Pot Pie for our supper FAST.

It works perfectly and there were rave reviews about my homemade meal from my handsome RancherMan. Now that’s a response that always warms my heart…

Cream-Of-Chicken Soup

Ingredients

  • CupsChicken broth
  • ¼CupMilk
  • 4TablespoonsAll-purpose flour
  • ¼teaspoonCelery seed
  • Salt & pepper to taste
  • Leftover shredded chickenoptional

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl mix 4 Tablespoons flour, salt, pepper, and ¼ teaspoon celery seed.

  2. In a saucepan over medium heat, add flour mixture & slowly stir in 2¼ cups chicken broth and ¼ cup milk. Simmer over medium heat until thickened. (You can add leftover shredded chicken if desired for a meatier soup.)

  3. Remove from heat and use in the place of a can of Cream-Of-Chicken soup in your recipe!
